Something I get asked frequently is, “how often should I get a Tarot Card reading?” There is no right or wrong answer to this. It depends on your intent, what type of reading you are seeking and the way you are using it. Most often I do readings that help my clients get clarity and guidance around the current energies. I usually start with “what does the Universe want you to know” and see where we go. This type of reading can be done about once a month, but the timing is really best determined by the events that have taken place since the last reading.
Things to Consider Before Scheduling a Reading
1) When was my last reading?
2) Have I made any changes or progress based on the last reading I received?
3) Am I seeking answers to an entirely different question versus my last reading?
4) What is my motivation for this reading? Am I just seeking a “better” result than I got last time or am I truly seeking an update no matter the outcome?
5) Do I feel ready to receive new guidance at this time?
Depending on how you answer those questions, and be honest with yourself, you may be ready for another reading. Going with your intuition and really reflecting on your motivation is the best way to know if it’s a good time.
Types of Tarot Readings and Their Timelines
Big Picture Readings
If you are looking for some indication about what is happening in the near future, then you could have a reading every six months or so, or perhaps every year. This kind of reading tends to involve a bigger “spread” or “layout” as Tarot Readers call it, with more cards in it. This allows a broader view of trends that may be coming into play around you. It usually tells a reader whether you are in a time of change or of relative stability– whether new stuff is going to happen or if things will remain very similar to how they are now. You don’t need this kind of reading very frequently. It’s “big picture” view and tends to change slowly.
Specific Question/Topic Readings
The Tarot is not a good choice for simple “Yes” or “No” questions, so it is best to be thoughtful and specific. Questions about situations, timing, relationships, and so on are great for this type of reading. Is this new job right for me? Should I do this or that (option A or option B)? What is the energy around my relationship with this person?
With a reading based on one specific topic, you can ask any time you like as long as the topics are different. Asking the same thing over and over, especially if you didn’t like the message the first time (#reshuffle!) will just add to the confusion and frustration. Asking the same question frequently, without making or experiencing any changes in between, is akin to nagging the Tarot deck. Ultimately we all have free will and you can choose to do (or not do) what the Tarot suggests, however unless there is a shift in the energy in some form, the outcome with the cards is unlikely to change.

Entertainment Only Readings
I often get asked to do parties or Ladies Night type of events. These can be tricky because Tarot isn’t exactly subtle. Often the people looking for this type of experience are wanting it to be fun and uplifting, but the truth is the Tarot is going to tell it like it is! If your group is up for a true Tarot experience, then these readings will provide valuable guidance to you. However, if your group is looking only for upbeat and fun messages, there’s no way to guarantee that, so I would likely suggest another form of entertainment.
Getting the Most Out of Your Reading
The best readings are more like a conversation with a Tarot deck and the reader serves as the translator. If you don’t participate in the conversation, by holding back or even lying, there’s no doubt the reading is going to fall flat. If you stay open to what is coming up and share information with the reader that helps connect the dots, your reading will be so much more insightful and productive FOR YOU.
There are times when the information doesn’t immediately resonate, and that’s ok. These are often aspects of the situation we have not yet seen or perhaps we are not yet willing to see. When you have an answer to a question, then it’s a good idea to spend time to reflect on it and consider how the reading has tried to open your eyes to a different perspective. This is one of the greatest strengths of the Tarot – it can help us to see solutions for ourselves.
By using Tarot wisely, it becomes like talking to a good friend. The answers often open up new ways of looking at our lives and can help us bring out the best for ourselves in the future. Like all good friends it responds best if you take the advice to heart and where possible, implement the changes being suggested.
